Our History

“The will of God will not lead you where His grace cannot keep you.”

- Rev. Enid Smellie
The Church that we now know as City Mission Church - Miami had its most humble beginning in 1976.

Within every man and woman, there is an aim and a destiny. The late Reverend John and Enid Smellie were natives of the Island of Jamaica. The voice of the Lord spoke to them one night, saying, “Why not try America.” They knew no one in there, yet they obeyed the voice of the Lord. They migrated to the United State, Miami Florida in 1969.  As the plane lifted this song, Reverend E. Smellie never knew rang within her heart, “All the way my savior leads me what have I to ask beside.”

The remaining family came in 1973.
The family fellowship with the Nondenominational Holiness Church, where Elder and Mother Rollinson were Ministers. The Lord blessed and prospered the family immensely in the area of finance through real estate. They were so grateful to God for his blessing on their life, that they proclaimed;  “What shall we render to the Lord for all his blessings”.

The call of Lord was upon their lives. The souls of men were dying and the field where white and ready for harvest.  The Lord visited them another time; Saying, “If you can testify you can preach," with that faith the doors of the Pentecostal City Mission Church in Coconut Grove, Florida was opened in1976.
The Church started with: Reverend John and Enid Smellie, their seven children and family friend Jerry Nelson. Chairs were bought for the pew and the pulpit was furnished with chairs from their dining table. There was not much fashion, but much devotion.
In the early nineteen-eighties, the church moved to its second location on Northwest 29th Street. God prospered the church, there was tremendous growth, numerically and spiritually. Lives changed for eternity, families reconciled, marriages reunited, and ministries formed. These ministries led and continue to lead people to Jesus Christ.

In 1999 they established Miami City Mission Youth Center a non-profit organization. The youth center ministry is a component of Rev. John & Enid Smellie's vision of ministering to the needs of the youth and citizens in the community, by ministering to the spiritual, physical and temporal needs of man. God blessed these two pioneers before their passing to see the congregation enter their present location. The Miami City Mission Youth Center complex houses an auditorium/sanctuary that seats over four hundred, also houses a fitness center, classrooms, and restaurant.

Even when it appears dark the future is bright at City Mission Worship Center, for God has established His covenant with his people and He will perform it to the end.

The Historical Record of City Mission Church here in Miami.

Our history provides evidence of faith, courage, and love toward God and fellow believers in Christ. We have a common bond as members of the Family of God, through the distinct and common heritage in and through Jesus Christ. The sacrifices which have been made by the ministers, and laymen and faithful members of old have contributed so much to the blessings and conveniences of the community and all who are now able to utilize the facilities of the Center and worship in the Sanctuary of the Lord.
